Do you have dental anxiety and fear of the dentist for your dental treatment? A lot of people are anxious about going to the dentist, sometimes they prefer not to have treatment or delay the treatment.
Sedation dentistry may take away some of your anxiety and help you really relax in the dentist’s chair. In sedation, dentistry dentist uses Happy Gas/Nitrous Sedation to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry”.
What is Happy Gas?
Happy Gas is a Nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas. It is helpful for you and your child in calming down the dental fear and receiving the necessary dental treatment in a comfortable way. The laughing gas gets you ready for dental treatment and assists you in pain control by putting away your fear and anxiety. There are different levels of sedation that are used in the procedure:
- Inhaled minimal sedation/Happy Gas
- Oral sedation/drugs used
- IV moderate sedation
- Deep sedation and general anesthesia
Happy Gas Procedure
Dental sedation allows you to safely calm your nerves and make you feel comfortable during the procedure. The Happy Gas/laughing gas procedure involves inhaling a small amount of nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen. It starts working quickly within just 2-3 minutes after you start breathing. The dentist starts the procedure only when a feeling of general relaxation is experienced after inhaling the nitrous oxide gas. On completion of the treatment, the patient is given pure oxygen to breathe for two or three minutes and then room air before leaving the surgery.
